Maybe it’s the hair. You can’t really see it under the plain black military scout’s cap he’s wearing this afternoon, but for the first time in half a decade or so, Eminem has reclaimed the Slim Shady platinum-blond look that he cast aside after beating a near-fatal pill addiction. Post-rehab, his emotional dial seemed slightly stuck on “grim determination”, but now, despite looming, beyond-final deadlines for his eighth studio album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, he’s in a disarmingly playful mood.

Most of my co-workers have already left the office when dynamo’s producer phones to tell me that the crew is in the parking lot downstairs. It’s the start of summer and the team is in Cape Town to shoot some footage for the third season of the hit street magic reality TV show, Dynamo: Magician Impossible. They’ve just come from Long Street and Greenmarket Square, where they’ve filmed some street magic, and have specifically asked to shoot Dynamo’s interview at our offices.I look out the window and I see the 30-year-old, fragile-of-frame Steven “Dynamo” Frayne getting out of the Mercedes rent-a-kombi with a McDonalds junior cheeseburger in one hand and a soft drink in the other.
